“Art Cube” is an artist’s visualisation, something you cannot put into words – Olga Filatova. A massive project “Art Cube” is about to be launched next week in Lviv by the art fund “Free”. This project will be presented within the framework of the Alfa Jazz festival. Oleh Davydenko, an artist and an author, gave a detailed description of the fund’s work. – Tell us about the “Art Cube’ project? Actually, how did you start the cooperation with the fund “Free’? – We have been in cooperation for five years with Olga Filatova, the chairman representative of the fund. We had interesting projects and ideas on creating sculptures in front of the hotel George. We exchanged pieces of advice on how to render the atmosphere of the past centuries. These were the main tasks, but later on we agreed on the creation of the idea of the fund, that would help to develop the Galician art and culture, with visual art implied. To help both young and mature artists to establish themselves in the context of the world art, take a rightful place and move on. At this very moment it is the right time, since Ukraine’s European orientation, visa free regime, give us hope, that our country will have a decent place in the European culture. We are on the way already, which makes it impossible to stop us, as the idea of the fund creation and its tasks, are quite honest, truthful and liable to completion. I am sure a lot of like-minded people, friends and ordinary people will appear and will be ready to help; perhaps even founders will join the projects, as for the fund alone it would be very difficult to cope with the tasks set ahead. We create a certain group of people that will take part in the organisation process of the projects and will continue co-working on a regular basis. That is to say, the frame of the fund is open to communication and dreams, because if dream together and work for its benefit, than it will definitely work out. – Who is the fund exactly aimed at giving help to? Just the artists or the artistic initiatives as well? – Yes, we have a future plan of taking such initiatives into consideration, but so far we are focused on the visual views of the art, I mean the sculpture, painting and everything connected with this. New forms of art comprise a performance, an installation, mapping, video art and the like. We have already mentioned that a massive festival of visual arts is about to take place in Lviv. We would to be held on same level as Alfa Jazz (we don’t really have so many events of that type). This is basically Alfa Jazz Book Forum, Lviv Fashion Week – events that have already taken their place in the European and world context; we want to do a project that would be on same level, so that guests from outside Ukraine would come visit it. – Tell us more about the “Art Cube”. – “Art Cube” is the symbol of artistic taste of our fund, it’s a metaphor, a heart, an energy cluster of would-be participants of this project, that is different artists in gender as well as in age, with different artistic preferences. We are interested in various intonations, shapes, styles – everything will be displayed in the cube. – What artists will take part? The ones you have negotiated with? Who did you invite? – At this stage we have artists from western Ukraine. – Who are they exactly? – We are planning to invite Vasyl Bazhai, Ihor Yanovych, Anya Bulkina, Viktor Prodanchuk, Liubomyr Yakymchuk. A lot of my friends replied to my request, the ones who we studied with, but I think the range of artists will only grow bigger as the possibilities are immense. – And who will conduct the selective round? It’s a collective way of selection. They include Olga Filatova, me and a set of artists, who will not be determined. – What is your future basic location? Will you be confined to a particular artistic spot? – We are on the stage of planning our artistic space. We wouldn’t like to talk in advance, but we have some locations in mind, where art would prosper. These locations would be of European scale. But we will attract the already existing locations, for example the Lviv airport. Some places are at the stage of building, some are being redecorated; we are searching, working on the creation of a museum of contemporary art. -Aren’t you afraid of competition? Dozens of modern organisations are gathering in Lviv these days, plus there are centres of modern art. It’s amazing to have this expansion. It is even necessary to have followers. It’s essential to create funds like this and conduct such artistic events, set up galleries. When they are abundant in number and every place would work with their own group of artists, then cultural events will be more frequent. This means effective competition. – Will you cooperate? – Yes, cooperation is possible. When these platforms grow in number, we will unite and “hit” Europe.
